Alpha Bravo Mike Mike: Christmas Edition

Dear Santa,

While most are writing to you with never-ending lists of demands and things they want to see under their Christmas tree this year, we’ve decided to take a different route.

We wanted to reach out to check in, see how you’re doing, and give you some tips for managing the health and wellbeing of you and your workers during this crazy time of year.

Despite your hectic holiday schedule, you stay healthy enough to delight children around the world year after year.

However, you’re not totally immune to the pressures of running a business and operating in a high-pressure and physical work environment — yes, just like us regular folk, occupational hazards also exist for Santa.

Your workshop may be magical, but you still need to ensure that your machines are properly guarded with isolations in place, chemicals are properly stored, and the proper processes are followed whenever your elves are working from height.

I know it’s busy, and everyone is under pressure working to a strict deadline, but that’s the most important time to check in with your Health and Safety Representatives to make sure everything is tickety-boo on the workshop floor.

You also need to be prepared for your delivery run. Do you have appropriate PPE for summer and winter climates? Have you got a fatigue management plan? Has the sleigh been maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations?

Santa, this is simple stuff.

You also need to be on the lookout for psychosocial risks, like bullying, harassment, overwork and stress. These can affect mental and physical health. We know Rudolph is a star performer, but that doesn’t excuse his behaviour towards Prancer.

While we’re on the topic, how’s your own mental health? Everyone always asks where’s Santa? but never how’s Santa?’

Oh, and while you’re in New Zealand you’ll need to comply with the Covid-19 Protection Framework. (Don’t worry if you can’t follow the diagram, I’ll send you a summary.)

Hon Chris Hipkins recently announced that you’re fully vaccinated (which is great news, but a breach of your privacy) but remember you need to be keeping a record of all the houses that you’re visiting (so, all of them), wear a mask (which might be hard with your beard), and make sure you physically distance wherever possible.

Anyway, all we want for Christmas is a nice break in the sun with our friends and whānau. That’d be great.

Meri Kirihimete,
